Glimpses of the North
Open-Air Art by Northern Artists
Glimpses on the hilltop of Iso-Syöte – An open-air Art Exhibition by artists from the Syöte Region as part of the Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture Programme
Glimpses is a unique open-air art exhibition held at the summit of Iso-Syöte, surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Syöte National Park. The exhibition is part of the Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture programme and will be open from June 5 to October 18, 2026.
Art in the heart of the fell landscape
Glimpses is a joint exhibition by seven artists, set at the hilltop of Iso-Syöte in the midst of the most beautiful scenery of Syöte National Park. The exhibition was born from the idea of local artists presenting their own interpretations of the region’s natural beauty, people, and traditions. Instead of a traditional gallery, the artworks are displayed directly in nature—where their themes and inspiration originate.
Art straight from the heart of Syöte
As part of the Oulu 2026 programme, Glimpses is a distinctive group exhibition where art and nature meet. The participating artists, Katariina Kuukasjärvi, Sinikka Tasala, Arja Äikäs, Teija Soini, Tiina Törmänen, Sami Säily, and Marjo Koskenkorva, are united by their deep connection to the Syöte region. The exhibition features painters, photographers, and a graphic artists, all with long careers in the arts. Many have exhibited widely across Finland and received recognition and awards for their work.
The selected artworks are deeply rooted in northern nature and life in the Syöte area—just like the artists themselves. Now is the time to present these works in the very landscape that inspired them.
Seven artists, dozens pieces of artworks, one spectacular landscape
Glimpses forms a cohesive whole, offering fleeting moments, movement, and the quiet strength inspired by the natural environment of Syöte.
The artworks are placed along a fell trail stretching a few hundred meters at the hilltop of Iso-Syöte. The exhibition invites visitors to pause, look around, and experience art as part of the landscape—within the very surroundings that shaped the themes and atmosphere of the works.
Open on nature’s terms
The Glimpses exhibition is open daily, at all hours—just like nature itself. Admission is free, and the exhibition will remain on view until October 18, 2026. Visitors can also access the exhibition via the new chairlift, Iso-Syöte Express.
The exhibition opens on June 5, 2026, at 1:00 PM. The programme includes an opening speech, artist presentations, and an opportunity to explore the exhibition together with the artists.
Glimpses is an invitation to experience art, nature, and northern culture in a truly unique way—as part of the Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture year.
